Why a Tie-Up Between Guyana & USA
America is the wealthiest, economically stable with the largest GDP and militarily most powerful nation, a multi-ethnic democracy with an established constitution, unique educational and judicial system, and opportunities for advancement. America provides for hundreds of groups from around the world, including a million Guyanese or people of Guyanese ancestry, unmatched rights and freedom and living in peaceful coexistence. Guyana is a developing country with tremendous natural resources and potential, and is experiencing rapid economic growth over the last decade. Meanwhile, it has provided limited opportunities for its own population for advancement in technology and professional skills, hence the large numbers of Guyanese in America, Canada and other countries. In spite of its recent growth, economic potential, and vast resources, surveys show that the vast majority of Guyanese wishes to migrate to America.

USA
is a well-established and well organized country, the wealthiest and most powerful in the world, that everyone wants to migrate to and settle for various reasons but primarily because of its guaranteed freedoms and for being known as the land of opportunities. Almost every Guyanese would like to visit and or settle permanently and or study and or work in America and or become a citizen of USA. Hundreds of thousands of Guyanese have settled in USA over the last six decades with descendants now of fourth generation living a life of comfort that was not easily possible in Guyana, and they have become ‘Americanized’ experiencing the great American dream.
Guyanese Americans
are proud of their newly embraced identity of being Americans but also retain their Guyanese heritage: Indians, Africans, Chinese, Amerindians, Portuguese, etc. In America, they freely engage in their cultural and religious practices and have institutionalized ‘Guyanese’ enclaves or communities that are distinctly ethnic Guyanese with high home ownership rates and incomes. They enjoy one of the highest standards of living among the hundreds of nationalities that have settled in USA. They also freely engage in political and socio-cultural activities with success. They are free to choose, not coerced or forced to engage in activities that support a narrow social or political agenda of an individual or party. Because of the massive migration from other populations from other countries, Guyanese in America are not marginalized as an ethnic group in the USA, while ethnic categorization and marginalization are widely practiced in Guyana.
Naturally, Guyanese in the USA would like their brethren in Guyana to enjoy a similar lifestyle and all rights and privileges as they do in America. Thus, they would like their former homeland of Guyana to be in a partnership with the USA. Guyana being part of the USA will guarantee a lifestyle and rights in Guyana similar to those enjoyed in America.

Also, Guyanese recognize that being part of the USA will offer protection against existential threats from Venezuela to absorb two thirds of Guyanese territory. American Territorial status will guarantee Guyanese equality and freedom and a minimum relatively high standard of living. It will also protect Guyana against drug traffickers and other dangerous elements including terrorists.

Failure of Guyana to reach Potential
Guyana has not been able to realize its true and full potential since its independence from Great Britain in 1966; and there are valid reasons for that as with other former British colonies (as well as those of other European powers) following independence. Bad governance and lack of credible oversight or supervision of a major wealthy democratic power are among the reasons that most former colonies have not been able to take off and develop like their former colonial masters. Territories still linked to colonial powers and territories associated with USA are doing extremely well with higher standard of living and enjoy security than those that have become independent during the 1950s thru 1980s. American territories have a standard of living, quality of life, and security than most former colonies that are independent today.
Underdevelopment and Migration
In spite of enormous natural resources and a literate population, Guyana has remained largely underdeveloped with lopsided income inequality with Guyanese looking to migrate and settle in the metropolis of UK, France, Holland, USA, etc. Guyanese have always yearned to leave the country as evidenced from the migration. Every year over the last sixty years, an average of over ten thousand Guyanese migrated to USA in search of better opportunities. Some years, over 20,000 made their way to USA and elsewhere. The migrants, together with their American born, outnumber the population in Guyana. And Guyana remains till this day a country in transit. Almost every Guyanese desire to migrate with USA the preferred destination because of opportunities presented, a better life, and safety and security.
Socio-Economic Issues
It is not surprising that Guyanese want to migrate primarily due to deeply troubling issues internally. After seventy years of self-rule and independence, the country has remained in near paralysis and inherently racially divided as it has been for over a century. There are regular racial flare ups between Afro-Guyanese and Indo-Guyanese, and that threat is always simmering below the surface. Elections have been problematic with the two major parties reluctant to accept the will of voters, and therefore, good governance has been a serious challenge. Corruption has been untamed as loyalties remain rampant in various sectors of the country. The standard of living is not rising to meet expectation and the purchasing power of the common person falls behind the rapidly increasing cost of living. Poverty is widespread in certain sectors.
Physical Threat
Neighbouring Venezuela is saber rattling, threatening invasion and seizure of two thirds of Guyana. Guyana is not in a position to resist Venezuelan incursions.
Summary
With Guyana facing a physical threat, and with Guyanese increasingly fed up with what passes as governance and all the other problems facing the country, and with Guyanese seeking to find another country to settle, the Guyana America Alliance urges aligning with USA, becoming a territory of America, advocating that this alliance will address almost all the socio-economic and political problems the country faces. If Guyana has a formal linkage up with USA, it will lead to better governance and upward socio-economic change. The Guyanese population and Guyanese ex-pats in the USA will readily embrace the alliance. The standard of living and national security will drastically improve. Guyanese in Guyana will feel comfortable that they can remain in the land of their birth, meaningfully contributing to its development and that they also have the option to freely travel to America and its other territories. And Guyanese expats living in the USA would be more encouraged to invest in Guyana’s development in all segments of society.
And Guyanese in USA will feel a peace of mind that their family members, friends, relatives, and their (former) homeland will have increased safety and also enjoy a higher standard of living and that they can travel to Guyana without security fears. Conclusion
A formal alliance between Guyana with USA will help to promote and achieve national integration, guarantee democratic system of governance, free and fair election to choose a government, value-based politics, and maximization of development potential.
